Michigan football players train for NFL Draft
Former Michigan players Mike Martin, Kevin Koger, Ryan Van Bergen, Mark Huyge and Steve Watson participate in a recent workout with Mike Barwis in preparation for the NFL combine and the team’s pro day. Barwis is Michigan’s former strength and conditioning coach. Not shown is David Molk, who also is training at Barwis Methods.

On the bench press it looked like the bar was attached to a cable machine – for negatives? – could anyone explain that? thanks
Those hang cleans Mike Martin are awful technique. If your philosophy is about power development and Olympic lifts then you better be able to teach them properly. Also, WTF was Ryan Van Bergan doing? You never do something like that!!!! Those movements are all about using your legs for explosive power and not your upper body. I can’t believe all these athletes fall for his bullshit training.
@jvick9006 Van Bergen hurt his foot in the Sugar Bowl so they are being careful with heavy weights while foots recovers – it says that in the video….. The hang cleans look ok to me – using full body. And to these athletes “falling for this training” – Woodley, Graham and a bunch of other successful pros are falling for it too. Just saying.
@mwade570 Thanks. I knew Van Bergen hurt his foot, which is why he shouldn’t be doing “High Pulls”. With an injured leg you should be doing things with the opposite leg with reps between 6-8 reps for neuromuscular adaptations to both legs, not high pulls. Secondly, I hope you’re not teaching anybody hand cleans because it isn’t just about using full body. He can’t even see the way the bar is traveling where he is standing. He should be on the side of him to see if the bar travels straight up.
@mwade570 Woodley, doesn’t train with him anymore. Graham, was injured all lat year. Injuries speak volumes when it comes to a strength and conditioning program. He’s had a lot since he’s been in Michigan.
@jvick9006 Mike was offered to be the highest paid S&C coach in the Nation! He consults for numerous pro teams and college teams. He is highly respected and over half the NFL teams offered him the strength job. If you hear him during the workout he is preaching the technique to Martin and is something they are working on. To act like you know more than the guy regarded as one of the best in the business is crazy. No disrespect but I love Mike that’s my dude and he’s the best. Period.
